What Is Insomnia & What Causes It?
Insomnia involves difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early—plus daytime effects like fatigue or trouble concentrating. Causes can include stress, irregular schedules, anxiety/depression, pain, caffeine, certain medications, circadian rhythm disruption (shift work, jet lag), sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome.
Common Sleep Problems & Signs
- Difficulty falling asleep or frequent night awakenings
- Early-morning awakenings with inability to return to sleep
- Daytime sleepiness, brain fog, irritability, low motivation
- Snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping (possible sleep apnea)
- Uncomfortable leg sensations or urge to move legs at night (RLS)
- Irregular sleep schedule or shift-work related sleepiness
Safety — If drowsy while driving or operating machinery, stop the activity and address sleep debt or seek medical care.
Contributors & Risk Factors
- Stress, anxiety, depression, trauma history
- Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, late heavy meals
- Blue-light exposure and variable bed/wake times
- Medical issues (pain, reflux, thyroid), medications
- Shift work, travel, or limited daylight exposure
We take a whole-person approach—addressing medical, behavioral, and environmental factors that affect sleep.
Evaluation: How We Assess Sleep
- Detailed sleep history (bedtime/waketime, naps, awakenings, routines)
- Review of caffeine, medications, substances, and medical conditions
- Screening for apnea, restless legs, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias
- Sleep diary or actigraphy when helpful
- Coordination with primary care and sleep medicine for testing as indicated
Clarity about the root causes lets us design a plan that works—and lasts.
Sleep Treatment at Arizon Wellness
CBT-I (First-Line for Chronic Insomnia)
Structured program including stimulus control, sleep restriction/optimization, cognitive strategies, and relapse prevention. Typically effective within weeks and durable over time.
Circadian Rhythm Support
Light timing, consistent wake time, wind-down routines, strategic naps, and—when appropriate—melatonin timing. Helpful for shift work, jet lag, and delayed/advanced sleep phase.
Medication Management (When Needed)
When CBT-I alone isn’t enough, we discuss targeted, time-limited options and taper plans. We avoid dependency-forming patterns and review interactions carefully.
Sleep Apnea & RLS Pathways
We screen for obstructive sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome and coordinate sleep studies or specialty referrals while continuing behavioral care.
Request an AppointmentWhen to Seek Help

Frequently Asked Questions
What is insomnia?
Difficulty falling or staying asleep—or waking too early—with daytime impairment, despite adequate opportunity to sleep.
What is CBT-I?
A structured, non-medication treatment that strengthens sleep drive, retrains habits, and reduces sleep anxiety. It’s recommended as first-line for chronic insomnia.
Do you prescribe sleep medications?
When appropriate, yes—usually for short-term or targeted use alongside CBT-I and sleep hygiene. We aim for the lowest effective dose and plan for tapering.
Can this be done via telehealth?
Yes. CBT-I and sleep coaching work well through secure virtual visits.
What if I might have sleep apnea?
We screen for apnea and coordinate testing with sleep medicine. We continue behavioral strategies alongside any device or treatment recommended.
